One thing I have quickly discovered in my short stint on Twitter is that people very much have an opinnion and are more than willing to share it.
And no topic seems to create quite as much of a “stir” of emotions around Twitter than automation tools that help you build your list of followers faster. Or really, any tool that is inconsistent with the “pure” twitters out there.
So, I though I would sound my opinion.
In that I will only truly attract those that are of similar mind; I guess it is best if I “speak my mind”.
I view twitter as a tool for fun and profit.
Fun because the connection process is just that ~ fun. Sharing with others long distance is tremendous fun and addicting. That said, I am here ultimately to also monetize my time on twitter.
So to have more fun and to assist in the monetization process, I view twitter as a tool to assist me in those two endeavors. And with any tool, proper use is in the eye of the beholder.
That said, ultimately, acceptable usage will be determined by Twitter.com not be me or anyone else.
If they decide that tools that automate the following process or the un-following process, or the tweeting or DM process are “not acceptable” they will establish their terms of service such that they are eliminated.
Until such time as they do that, I will maximize my fun and earning capacity by taking advantage of the automation tools that are available.
And I would expect anyone else to do so likewise.
Lets face it, in a permission based social networking world, spam is ultimately impossible.
If you don’t like it you block or un-follow it.
Specifically, if you don’t like my content, you will not continue to follow me. So while I might build my list faster with automation, I will only maintain my list of followers if I treat them right.
Basically, I need to treat them at least as well as I myself would like to be treated.
For example, I really do NOT like automated DMs that are created when someone follows me. Therefore I never setup those types of DMs even though I have the automation to do so.
In this specific case, that also means I don’t see many of my DMs and rely more on Replies to communicate with my list of followers ~ at least initially. So, am I upset that others use automated DMs ~ no.
But my response to the behavior of automated DMs basically eliminates the effectiveness of those DMs.
Everyone has the choice. Chose to use Twitter whichever way you prefer.
I want “more” interesting conversations, personal connections and eventually profits.
If you don’t like my approach to using Twitter, then by all means un-follow or block me. Because we obviously are not kindred spirits and will never really connect anyhow.
But don’t, IMHO, waste negative energy complaining about the way others use “your” twitter. Just find others that feel the same way you do and follow them
